Pastor Michael W. & Helena Dyson
Pastor Dyson was born in Havre-De-Grace, Maryland, a seaside community outside of Baltimore, the youngest of eight children. He grew up in Dayton, Ohio. His parents came into the knowledge of the Seventh-day Adventist faith in the 1950’s under Elder’s William Irving, Bill Scales, Jr., and Elder Brewer in Conowingo, Maryland.
His family became members of Ethan Temple SDA Church in Dayton. Upon High School graduation he enlisted in the military. While stationed at a Marine Corps Reserve Center in Columbus, Ohio, he met his future wife Helena Ely, from Mobile, Alabama; a student at Capital University. She graduated as a registered nurse and later received a commission in the U.S. Navy.
Two sons were born to them while stationed in Jacksonville, Florida where they were members of the Ephesus SDA Church and after Florida the family was assigned overseas to Okinawa, Japan and became active members of the Okinawa International Seventh-day Adventist Church. They later stationed in Southern Virginia where they became members of the Prentis Park Seventh-day Adventist Church in Portsmouth, VA. After four years, the family was reassigned back to Okinawa, Japan. This was a great opportunity for ministry in and out of uniform. Pastor Dyson served as the Lay Pastor of the Okinawa Church and started a branch Sabbath School on the Northern part of the island.
In November 2001, after 25 years of active duty, he was honorably retired from military service and returned to the U.S. He soon graduated with honors from Hampton University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Religious Studies. “God has given me tremendous experiences in pastoral ministry and I look forward in anticipation of this next chapter in the journey. All this serves as an introduction, but the most important thing in my life is to be used by God in whatever capacity that He desires.” - Pastor Michael W. Dyson
